BitsBox August 2015 Review

BitsBox August 2015 Review

Bitsbox is a subscription box that helps teach kids 6-12 about computer coding.  Each box is filled with computer programming to make fun, real working apps.  Bitsbox provides a free website to fill enter the codes.  Once the code is completed, your child can scan the QR code to download the app.  Bitsbox also includes fun toys, stickers, tattoos and other goodies as well.  There are two month to month subscriptions.  There is a $20.00/month box, that is a PDF of the computer code, which is emailed to you each month.  For $40.00/month you can get the box with the booklets, toys, stickers, tattoos and more.

The Details:

Cost: $20.00/month for the PDF version, $40.00/month regular box version, $35.00/month (3 months), $30.00/month (12 months)

Coupon: Use the code SBM20 to save 20% off your subscription.

What's in the box? Bitsbox sends a box full of Javascript/HTML5 craft codes, tattoos, stickers, and a toy.

When are the boxes mailed out?  The 20th of the month.

Bitsbox ships in a yellow box that has little icons all over the sides of the box.

The most important part of the box is this booklet.  The theme for August is “Go Play Outside”.  The book features 20 different apps to code.

My husband and 6 year old picked the Fireworks! app to build.

To get started, you enter the four digit code at the top of the page.

You are then taken to a screen where you enter all the code.  You are alerted if there is an error, but they don't tell you which line the error is at.   Once the code is entered, you can download it on your phone.

This is a rough look at the app. You can customize each app with sounds, backgrounds and more.

042

The back cover included sounds, songs, fills and stamps you can use to customize your app.

Stickers + Tattoos

There were some big stickers, and two sheets of temporary tattoos.  I love the I “heart” code tattoo.

Trading Cards

There was a pack of 10 Trading cards with codes on the back of each one.  This means, you can make 30 different apps with this box!

Tie Not Fast N' Easy Filler + Balloons:

Tie Not Fast N' Easy Filler + Balloons: This toy lets kids fill and tie water balloons easily.  There were 150 water balloons sent, so this will make for some fun summer play time.

Final Thought: This a really fun and unique box.  Apps and online gaming is all the rage and this lets kids start to learn how to create them.  My 6 year old loves his ipod and this is a great way to give him screen time, while teaching him computer skills.  For kids 6-12, this is a great box to teaching computer coding skills.  For future boxes, it would be great to be told what line of code the error is, this will make it easier for kids.  To try Bitsbox, use this link with the code SBM20 to save 20%.
