Kiwi Crate February 2014: Around the World – $10.00 Discount Code
Kiwi Crate was our family's first subscription box and it remains our favorite. Kiwi Crate is $19.95 a month, and each month you get at least two big crafts along with Explore Magazine. Explore Magazine is a magazine that is included in every box. You can also add supplies for a sibling for only $7.95. The Explore Magazine is filled with cartoons, activities, and bonus crafts. My son L loves Kiwi Crate. He is always so excited to get this box and see what the theme is for the month.
Kiwi Crate February 2014
L learned several of the letters of the alphabet from Kiwi Crate. My son loves seeing that little green box every month.
Around the World
This month's theme was Around the World. The two main crafts were My World Flags and My World Map. L is fascinated by world travel and loves learning about new places. His current obsession is Paris, France. I knew by the theme, L would love this box.
My World Flags
The first project was My World Flags. Kiwi Crate included felt stickers in red, yellow, green and blue. There were also five canvas flags with some rope.
My World Flags Instructions
Kiwi Crate always tells you how messy the project it, how much parent involvement there is and what skills the child will work on. This project was rated low for messiness, low for parental involvement and skills were: discovering, creating, moving-fine.
China Flag
L had a great time making the flags and I helped very little. He used the patterns and made flags for China, Brazil, Japan and France. He also made a flag, based on his own designs.
Brazil Flag
I loved the the Brazil flag required L to cut. We are working on cutting skills and I was really impressed with seeing how well L can cut. Kiwi Crate includes scissors in your first box, so you won't ever have to buy anything.
Making his own flag
Part of the instructions said to put a piece of tape over the end of the string, to lace the flags. I couldn't find the tape, maybe it got thrown away. I taped the end of the string to a pencil, and that worked out great.
My World Flags
This is the finished project! Don't they look great?
My World Map
The next project was My World Map. Kiwi Craft included punch out landmarks, people, clothespins, foam tape, dots, instructions, bingo cards, and a HUGE map.
My World Map Instructions
This was rated low for messiness, medium for parental involvement and skills were: discovering, exploring , communicating.
World Map Playing Cards
My World Map included a deck of playing cards. The activity is also a game. There was a longer more complicated version and an easier quicker version of the game. I liked that there are two versions, since Kiwi Crate is made for children 3-7.
Assembling the Map
The first part was to assemble the map. The was a white sketch of each landmark on the map. L had to find the landmark and match it with the current landmark. L did great and had fun learning the names of new places.
Playing the Game
In the easy version of the game, you get a card with a landmark on it. You have to find the landmark and place your person on the spot. You also had a bingo card with landmarks on it. Once you clip your person on the landmark, you place a dot on that landmark on the card. Once you get BINGO, you win. L ended up winning the game. L learned so much during this game. By the end, he was telling me where to put my person.
Explore Magazine
Explore is a fun activity book included in Kiwi Crate. There is so much stuff to do in each magazine. There is always a cartoon with Steve the Kiwi and various other activities.
Africa: My Necklace
One of the first activities was Africa: My Necklace. This activity shows you how to make an African necklace.
Blubber Experiment
The next activity is Blubber experiment. I remember doing this as a child. L doesn't like getting his hands dirty, so I am not sure he will like it.
North America: My Dream Catcher
North America: My Dream Catcher is one of the last activity. L is really good with his hand and I think he will really enjoy this activity.
Travel Passport
There is also a passport at the end of the book. L has another toy passport, and he loves it! I am glad to have another.
Around the World Crate
Final Thought: This was an outstanding month. I think this was my son's favorite Kiwi Crate. I was never really into Geography, but L seems to really enjoy it. I love that the map is a game and can be played over and over. We have already played it twice. The flags turned out super cute and they are hanging in my son's room.
