I was sent Discovery Box #43: Volcanoes, Crystals & Gems.

There was a fold out brochure that gave information about subscriptions, single boxes and party favors.

There were four projects in the box and each project comes in it's own bag with instructions.  I love this idea, because you can grab one project and take it to grandma's house or vacation.

Rock, Mineral and Gem Dig My 7 year old loves these kids.  You are given tools, a sand block and a magnifying glass.  The box says you get two specimens, but my son just received one.

Digging in.

My son received quartz!

Project 1: Crystal Growing Kit

The first project was to grow crystals on a pipe cleaner.  The kit came with a pipe cleaner, yarn, borax powder, and round stick.

Your child starts with creating a shape out of the pip cleaner.  Then you add borax powder to 1 cup of boiling water and sir.  The yarn is tied on the stick then the shape is suspended in the liquid.

This is a look at the crystals after just a few hours.

Project 2: Geode Kit

There were two small geodes to crack open and inspect.

You just put them in a sock and hit it lightly with a hammer.

We hit our geodes a bit too hard and they shattered.  My son was still able to inspect them.  These geodes were mined in Iowa and contained quartz crystals in different colors.

Project 3: Erupting Volcano

This process involves the same basic ingredients we have all used for a volcano, but you child also gets to make the actual volcano. The kit included clay, baking soda, lava rocks, bottle and food coloring.

The cup goes inside the volcano. That's where the mixture will go.

This is our volcano erupting.  The lava wasn't bright red, but my son had a great time. The back of the information card had more activities you could do at home to learn about plate tectonics.

Project 4: Eruption Abstract Art

The last activity was to make art that resembles an eruption pattern. This craft includes, black paper, a brush, paint and a marble.

You put paint on the paper and then roll around the marble to create the look you want.

Here are the finished pieces.  It's interesting how the same technique produced two very different looks.

There was a card on Jackson Pollock, a famous artist.

Final Thought: This was such a fun box for my 7 year old.  He loves volcanoes, crystals, gems, and rocks.  I think this ended up being on of my son's favorite craft/activities boxes. Green Kid Crafts really packs the activities in the box, so you really get your money's worth. If you want to subscribe, use my exclusive coupon code SUBMOM50 to get 50 off your 1st box.
