KiwiCo Fire Lab Project Kit Review

The Fire Lab from Kiwi Co is part of the new Chemistry Lab Set. The chemistry lab set is made up of three boxes: Vortex Lab, Fire Lab, and Glow Lab. You can buy them all for $109.95 and save $20.00! The Vortex Lab sells alone for $34.95 and includes everything you need to make a colorful flame lamp, along with 7 other experiments. Young Scientists will learn the chemistry of combustion, oxidation, and capillary action.

Everything came in Kiwi Co box, with a colorful sleeve about the lab. The back of the box has a picture with all the supplies listed.

First Look

All of the experiments are found in this lab book.

When you open the book, there is a glossary and the scientific method.

There is also a page with all the supplies listed.

Tools: There are pipettes, scoops, stir sticks, test tubes, matches, burner, burner holder, steel wool, candle, and cotton swabs.

Safety: To keep you safe, the box includes a mess mat, googles and three different sizes of gloves. The gloves were left out of my box, but I just used ones from another box.

Chemicals: The box includes Methanol, Lithium Chloride, Strontium Chloride, and Copper Chloride.

Experiment 1: Fire & Fuels

The first experiment was quite easy. The silver sheet serves as the protective surface for the candle and the jar of water makes sure everything is extinguished. You light the candle and burn one cotton swab, then put out the flame. The second swab is coated in methanol and then burned. fuel, so it burns first, before burning the cotton.

Experiment 2: Fire & Oxygen

The second experiment uses the glass burner for an experiment on oxygen and how it affects fire. Once the jar was placed over the flame, the fire lost oxygen and so the flame was extinguished.

Experiment 3 Flame Vacuum

This is a similar experiment to the last one, only you fill up the bottom of the orange container with water, then place the jar on top.

Experiment 4: Solid Flame Test

For this experiment, you coat the cotton ball in melted wax, then you dip the cotton swab in various powdered chemicals. Once coated, you put it in the fire to see what color the chemicals turn.

Lithium Chloride turned red.

Copper Chloride turned green.

Strontium Chloride turned red/yellow.

Experiment 5: Liquid Flame Test

For this experiment, You mix each of the powdered chemicals in the last experiment with methanol.

Each of the test tubes is labeled, so you know which is which. You coat a cotton swap with each of the chemicals, one by one and observe the reaction.

Lithium Chloride turned red.

Copper Chloride turned green.

Strontium Chloride turned yellow.

Experiment 6: Burning Steel

For this experiment, you will pull off a piece of steel wool, stretch it out and burn it.

This is the steel wool burning.

Final Thought: My son loved completing these experiments. I completed most of the work, as I really didn't want my son to be near fire. There were many experiments in the box, so your child won't be bored. While designed for14 years and up, with supervision, this would be a good box for younger kids too. You can buy this box for $34.95 or buy all three chemistry kits for $109.95, a savings of $20.00. These are one time only boxes, so you won't be signed up for a subscription.
